Magnetism in Tassie

Dates: February 15–19, 2027

Location: University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia

Registration and abstract submission is now open. The SOC will begin reviewing contributed talk abstracts on November 2, 2026. We intend to notify selected speakers by November 16.

There will be no registration fee for the main part of the conference. We will provide details of the conference dinner at a later time; this may include a cost.

Contact the organizing committee at hobart-magnetism-soc at lists.ubc.ca.

Format

We are planning the workshop to consist of three hours of talks per day. After formal talks, there will be significant time each day for moderated topical discussions and collaboration.

Topics

The scientific organising committee has identified a number of scientific and technical questions to give a flavour for the topics we hope to investigate at the meeting.

  • Scientific questions
    • Structure of magnetic fields in the Milky Way
      • Large-scale structure
      • Structure in the solar neighbourhood
      • Connection of magnetic fields to discrete ISM structures
      • Properties of the Local Bubble
      • How large-scale magnetic field connects to smaller cloud/envelope scales
    • How large-scale magnetic field connects to smaller cloud/envelope scales
    • Energy balance / partition in diffuse ISM
    • Relative orientation of 3D field with respect to density structures
    • Properties of the Local Bubble and its impact on Galactic and extragalactic observations
    • Dynamical impact of magnetic fields on star formation and galaxy evolution
    • Impact of the Local Bubble on Galactic and extragalactic observations
    • Dynamical impact of magnetic fields on star formation and galaxy evolution
  • Technical questions
    • Large-scale diffuse emission: single antennas and interferometers
      • Combining large-scale surveys across wavelengths
      • Combining large-scale surveys across latitudes
    • QU fitting vs Faraday synthesis
    • How do we separate foreground emission for extragalactic/distant Galactic studies?
    • What information can we extract by comparing RM-grids with diffuse emission?
    • Preparation for large-scale data expected from next-generation telescopes (especially SKA)
